No woman ever wants to hear that they have a ovarian cyst. Although some of these types of benign cysts completely, they can still cause a tremendous amount of pain and fear. A kind of cyst usually benign, is an ovarian dermoid cyst.

The strange thing about this type of cyst that typically contains other types of tissues of the hair, bone, teeth and thyroid. These cysts usually develop a certain type of cell within the egg sac, called the ovary. The cyst can be made from a single cell that is of a certain area of the body. They are usually filled with a fatty substance that things like hair, teeth and even contain cartilage.

It can happen at any age, but they are normally detected during the reproductive years. The mean age at diagnosis is 30 years old. How the cyst is treated is very important for a woman of this age.

Approximately 15% of women feel they dermoid cysts in both ovaries. They can range in size from less than one half inch to 17 inches in diameter. They can endanger a woman’s fertility, because the ovary can cause twisting and cutting off the blood supply. If the dermoid is larger, has a higher risk of collapse and spill its contents, which cause pain and possible adhesions.

While most dermoid cysts are benign (approximately 98%), some of the remaining 2% can be cancerous. They can be removed through a laparotomy or laparoscopy. If the cyst is twisted, that is an emergency and needs urgent treatment with surgery. Cutting off the blood supply to one ovary may compromise fertility of a woman.

After a dermoid ovarian cyst removed should not affect future fertility. However, in the place where it can cause cracks and end pain. If a cyst ruptures, it can also cause adhesions that may impede future fertility. After cysts can provoke anxiety and concern for women, so it is important that the doctor actually examine what is happening and to formulate a plan of approach.
